Web-Based Sharing of Carbonate Stratigraphy and Reservoir Information
Sharing of information has becoming increasingly difficult within large oil and gas companies due to decentralized organizations, the broad global distribution of their people, and increased individual workloads. To help overcome these challenges within our company, a robust internal carbonate website was developed for the purpose of facilitating discussion and sharing of information. Unlike the well-established email discussion list, information can be stored for easy access by employees when and where it is required. In our opinion, this feature is a valuable tool for sharing such things as comparisons of stratigraphic frameworks of carbonate fields, for stratigraphic training, and searching for resources.
The carbonate website was designed with ease of navigation in mind and is used as a universal template for other internal technical group websites. An overriding goal is to shape people's behaviors about gathering and comparing useful information. Data management plans are currently being integrated with company wide strategies to maintain consistency within the intranet.
Some of the functionality of the website which will be illustrated includes (1) an organizational list of internal carbonate resources by specialty; (2) digital records of annual internal carbonate meetings and short courses; (3) up-to-date information of training opportunities and external meetings; (4) access to carbonate fields and rock property databases; (5) electronic versions of basic carbonate courses; (6) virtual field trips; (7) searchable digital library of internal carbonate publications; and (8) links to key university research programs, publications, and geology sites.
