The West Natuna Basin has been the site for successful hydrocarbon exploration for over 25 years. Now with the initiation of the West Natuna Gas Project the region is entering a new commercial era.
Integration of seismic sequence stratigraphy and lithostratigraphy using multiple 3D datasets and regional tie lines has shed new light on the tectonostratigraphic development of the West Natuna Basin and the resulting sedimentary response throughout the Tertiary .
The basin history can be divided into four megasequences :- the syn-rift, post-rift, syn-inversion and post-inversion. Each phase is characterized by a unique association of sequence geometry, facies associations and reservoir architecture.
The key lithostratigraphic units that comprise each tectonostratigraphic megasequence are illustrated, and their relationships discussed within a sequence stratigraphic framework. Type and reference sections for each lithostratigraphic unit are provided where these are absent from the literature.
