Fundamental Sedimentary Bodies: Similarity, Processes, and Properties -- New Models for Reservoir Characterization (SEPM)
Energy gradient minimization,scale-invariant sedimentary bodies, and the independence of the relative properties of fundamental sedimentary bodies from environment of deposition forms the basis for a new way of thinking about sedimentary systems. This session will examine fundamental sedimentary bodies as the building blocks of sedimentary systems, the scale-invariance of these bodies, how they evolve and organize. The controls of energy gradient minimization will be explored as the foundation for a new understanding of the origin of channels, scours, sedimentary bodies of all scales, and sequence boundaries. This session will bring together the results from experimentation, field work, and numerical modeling. The integrated results will be applicable to geological modeling, reservoir characterization, and production and development geology

Plate Tectonics and Paleoclimates: Implications for Basin Evolution and Hydrocarbon Exploration (SEPM)
The configuration and motion of the Earth’s plates have had a profound impact on the evolution of the Earth’s climate, oceanography, and geography. These factors provide strong influence on basin history and associated hydrocarbon systems. To explore the predictive capability of these relationships, we invite contributions spanning a broad range of earth science disciplines including plate tectonics, geodynamics, paleogeography, paleoclimate, paleooceanography, and hinterland/provenance studies. The goal of this session is to explore the latest models of plate motion, paleogeography and paleoclimate as the framework for new ideas about basin evolution and implications for hydrocarbon exploration

SEPM Forum: High-Resolution Sequence Stratigraphy: Is the Model Breaking Apart?
Debate about validity of sequence stratigraphic model in high-resolution stratigraphic correlations. The objective is to have an open debate about the controversies associated to sequence stratigraphic interpretations in high-resolution data sets. Several researchers are puzzled with questions arising from interpretation in high resolution surveys: What is the relationship between sea level and systems tracts during the last glacial cycle? Are the sequence stratigraphic surfaces in fact time transgressive? Which surfaces are more likely to be synchronous? What are the implications for reservoir correlation and mapping? The Research Forum will address these and other questions. The Forum will have a mediator and 6 invited guests that will lead the discussion, with representatives from industry and academia, with different approaches and points of views about the subject. This format will allow that different opinions be expressed and defended on a scientific basis, and we hope that may shed a light on this controversial subject. The mediator of the 2006 Research Forum will be Vitor Abreu (ExxonMobil), and the invited guests are John Anderson (Rice University), Rick Beaubouef (ExxonMobil), Mike Blum (LSU), Bill Galloway (UT, Austin), Jack Neal (ExxonMobil), Henry Posamentier (Anadarko), and Charlie Winker (Shell)
